Pentecost & Corpus Christi
At the beginning of summer in the Christian Church we celebrate two important festivals – Pentecost and Corpus Christi. These are the most important Christian celebrations next to Chiristmas and Easter.
Pentecost is observed 50 days after Easter and hence its name – Pentecost. In Greek pente means five and pentikonta means fifty or pentecoste meaning 50th– hence its name Pentecost. Easter is a moveable festival and since Pentecost falls 50 days later it is also a moveable one but always falling on a Sunday between May 10 and June 13. Little is heard about this feast as there is no bank holiday then and Sunday is normally a day free of work.
For the Catholics it is a crucial holiday as in fact we celebrate then the birthday of the Church itself. On Pentecost we commemorate the day when the Holy Spirit entered a room holding Jesus’ apostles and entered each of them crating the commonwealth of the Church in this way.
When Jusus was ascending to heaven he promised to send the comforter – the holy spirit. And this Holy Spirit came on the day of Pentecost – fifty days after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit also gave the apostles other gifts necessary to go out and preach the teachings of Jesus to all nations. It follows the New Testament promise from Jesus Christ that the Apostles would be “clothed with power” before they would go out to spread the Gospel. It was right after Pentecost that St. Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit, preached to Jews and other non believers about the teaching of Christ. He told that Jesus whom they had crucified was raised from the dead. Many new followers were baptized then.
From historical point of view Christianity started with Pentecost.
Typically priests wear read robes on Pentecost which is a symbol of God’s love and tongues of fire descended on the apostles. In some countries though Pentecost is represented with the color white as a symbol of the dove of the Holy Spirit.
In Italy red rose leaves are scattered as a symbol of fiery tongues and for this reason it is sometimes called Pascha Rosatum (Easter roses).
